“He wrote a song called ‘Tecumseh Valley,’” he said. “There’s an establishment in there named Gypsy Sally’s. I said if I ever open another place, I’m going to call it Gypsy Sally’s.”

The Carpenters didn’t feel compelled to change much about the relaxed interior of the restaurant, formerly Edgar’s Southwestern Grill.

They left the mural and aged wooden floors alone, adding tablecloths and a new coat of paint. New light fixtures are next on their list.

“The building has so much character that we didn’t have to do much to suit what we wanted to do,” Carpenter said. “I want it to be OK for sailors and senators.”

Gypsy Sally’s is open for lunch Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and for dinner Wednesday through Sunday from 5–9 p.m. They also cater.
