Officer Donald Joshua Newman of the Jemison Police Department was one of four fallen law enforcement officers honored at a memorial service in Montgomery on Friday, May 11.
Gov. Robert Bentley and Attorney General Luther Strange spoke at the annual Alabama State Fraternal Order of Police Memorial Service held at the Alabama Capitol.
“It was nice,” said Jemison Police Chief Shane Fulmer. “They had a nice setting. Probably 200 officers attended.”
Fulmer said he received a medal of honor to be given to Newman’s family, who were unable to attend because they were participating in the national memorial service for fallen officers in Washington D.C.
“I wanted to do to D.C. so bad I couldn’t stand it, but at least I was able to send someone from the department up there to be with the family,” Fulmer said.
Others honored in Montgomery were Officer Trevor Scott Phillips of the Tuscaloosa Police Department, Officer Justin Sollohub of the Anniston Police Department and Deputy Marvin Mulder of the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office.
