Legendary Harlem Globetrotter Michael Douglas will grace Chilton County with his presence twice this year to help promote and participate in the second annual “Get Moving Jemison” program.

Douglas will speak to students at Jemison Middle School on Feb. 3 about the importance of a healthy lifestyle, one of the purposes of “Get Moving Jemison.”

“We’re hoping that some of the other schools will allow him to come,” said Ginny Hallmark, the program’s organizer. “This really is for all of Chilton County. I really want people to start training and gearing up for this now.”

“Get Moving Jemison” will be March 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Jemison City Hall and includes a 5k or one-mile fun walk/run and a health and fitness expo.

The walk/run will start at 9 a.m. in the Jemison Municipal Complex parking lot, and the expo will last from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“I’m hoping that we’ll get a lot of people to register,” Hallmark said. “We had a very good turnout last year. We had over 200 people.”

Registration for the walk/run is $20 per person and may be completed online at active.com, keyword “Get Moving Jemison.”

The health and fitness expo is free to attend.

Entertainment will include a Zumba routine from the Chilton County YMCA group, a performance from Chilton Dance and Twirl and a skit from a local Girl Scout troop.

Anne Taddicken of Chilton Medical Center suggested that people prepare for “Get Moving Jemison” by participating in Scale Back Alabama, a 10-week, statewide weight-loss program beginning Jan. 21.

“That’s one reason we’re very supportive of Ginny’s fun run and 5k,” Taddicken said. “That we can work together and maybe make a difference in our community and county.”

Hallmark said she is accepting donations, sponsorships and vendors for “Get Moving Jemison.” All donations will fund the event’s venue, prizes and supplies.

“I want to make it like a big party,” Hallmark said. “With a Harlem Globetrotter coming this year, that’s pretty huge.”
