Students visit fire, police departments

Preschool students from Clanton First Baptist Church’s program are learning about the city’s first responders this week as well as information that might save a life one day.
For Community Helpers Week, the students are visiting the Clanton Fire Department and Clanton Police Department and having ambulance workers talk about their career. It’s an annual program for the church’s preschool.
The children walked from First Baptist down to Fire Station No. 1, where they met Fire Chief David Driver.
Preston Edwards got to wear a firefighter’s uniform, complete with boots, pants and suspenders, jacket and helmet — even if it was a little big for him. Driver talked about each part of the uniform and how they protect firefighters from getting burned or injured.
He also demonstrated an air tank and oxygen masks and explained how they prevent firefighters from getting hurt “on the inside” from smoking inhalation.
Driver also told the students how important it was to never play with matches, lighters or stoves.
In the event of a fire, Driver told the children the first thing they should do in a fire is to get outside, and he went over “Stop, Drop and Roll.”
He also made sure students knew how to dial “911” in case of an emergency.
After visiting the fire station, the students went a block over to the police station, where they met with Police Chief Brian Stilwell and several other officers. They met Donald Giles and his K-9 officer, Tiger, a 6-year-old yellow lab. Giles demonstrated how Tiger searches vehicles.
The students also went through a patrol car and were given a badge by Stilwell.
The preschool continues learning about community helpers later this week when they are visited by EMTs.
