A failed 2-point conversion cost Verbena a football game at Fayetteville on Sept. 30.
The Red Devils lost, 21-20.
Verbena’s Duante Talley rushed 18 times for 155 yards and two touchdowns, the first of which was a 90-yard dash that gave the Devils a 6-0 lead, after a failed 2-point try.
Fayetteville (1-5 overall, 1-3 region) took a 7-6 lead by halftime, but Verbena’s Bay Lucas ran back the opening kickoff of the second half.
Lucas also ran in the 2-point conversion play for a 14-7 VHS lead.
The hosts took a 21-4 lead with about 8 minutes remaining on the clock, but then Talley recorded his second touchdown.
Verbena failed to convert the 2-point conversion that would have given them the lead.
“I thought the odds were better of getting the two points instead of the one,” Verbena coach Mike Harris said. “We’ve only made about two extra points all year.”
Jesse Ellis led the Devils defense with 10 tackles. Talley had nine tackles.
