Two local youth baseball teams are participating in Dizzy Dean World Series tournaments—and both won their first games Friday.
Clanton’s 9-and-under team defeated a team from Rossville, Ga., 13-10.
The North Chilton Orioles 11-and-under team defeated Marietta, Ga., 15-5.
Clanton pitchers Bryson Mims, Cade Davidson, Cameron Baker and Preston Smith combined to hold Rossville in check, while several Clanton players had good days at the plate, including Jacob Marino and Dalton Patterson.
Russ Rhodes caught all six innings and also had a couple of hits.
Lawson Patterson and Tucker Price—who started the game ending double play—were outstanding in the field.
Luke Dale and Harrison saw time as pinch runners and contributed to several Clanton runs.
Only four Alabama teams in the 9-and-under age group competed in the tournament, and Clanton was the only one that won on the first day of competition.
“We’re happy to come down here and have fun and be successful our first day,” coach Jeff Price said about the tournament in Jackson County, Ga.
Clanton plays Wills Park at noon on Saturday.
For the Orioles, also playing in Jackson County, Ryan Fransler pitched three innings and hit a home run.
Will Johns also hit a home run.
Diquon Lane and Grayson Bice both went 3-for-4 at the plate.
Cain Niece pitched two innings for the Orioles, who will play host Jackson County at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
