An Interstate road rage incident on July Fourth resulted in a gunshot and an arrest.
Christopher Payton, 36, of Leeds was arrested in Autauga County by Alabama State Troopers after allegedly firing a gun from his vehicle and striking another vehicle as they both traveled southbound on Interstate 65 near the 204-mile marker.
According to the victim, a 16-year-old Florida resident, the defendant pointed a handgun at the victim as the defendant passed by. Then, the defendant fired a round at the rear driver’s side tire, disabling the victim’s vehicle and causing noticeable impact to the undercarriage of the vehicle.
Also in the victim’s vehicle was his father, 13-year-old brother and 6-year-old sister.
Payton was placed in Chilton County Jail under $12,500 bond.
“Thankfully, no one was injured in this incident despite the serious risk to the family of the victim,” CPD Capt. David Clackley said. “If anyone was traveling the interstate and witnessed this incident, please contact the Clanton Police Department Criminal Investigations Division at 205-755-1194.”
Detective Whitney Ray will handle the investigation.
