More officers than normal will be patrolling Clanton streets over Memorial Day weekend. The department has once again received a grant to pay officer’s overtime.
The purpose of the blitz will be to increase patrols, reduce accidents and DUIs and look for aggressive driving, Clanton Police Chief Brian Stilwell said. The increased patrols will run Thursday, May 26 through Tuesday, June 1.
In addition to the extra officers on patrol, several safety checkpoints may be set up throughout the city, Stilwell said.
The grant is from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs Traffic Safety Division. The safety office, based at Jefferson State Community College, covers Chilton, Bibb, Blount, Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair and Walker counties.
