A Clanton man has been arrested in connection with a Saturday burglary of a gas station.
L.J. Smith faces charges of burglary, theft, eluding an officer and resisting arrest.
At approximately 2:10 Saturday morning, Clanton police officers were dispatched to the Pure Station at 106 Enterprise Road on a business alarm. When they arrived at the store, they found a window had been broken out and several packs of cigarettes were missing.
Sgt. Randy Morris and officers Larry Colburn and David Kline as well as sheriff’s deputy Nathan Willis started searching the area and located Smith near Liberty Street. As they approached him, Smith ran and attempted to hide, according to Capt. David Clackley.
Smith’s likeness was compared to video surveillance from the store, and he was arrested and placed in the Chilton County Jail under bonds totaling $6,750.
At the time of his arrest, Smith was out of jail on bonds in connection with a car break-in last November. Given the new charges, bonds on the earlier charges have been revoked.
“We are working with the judicial system to ensure repeat offenders are held accountable and are not allowed to commit more crimes while on bond,” said Clackley. “Thanks to the patrol officers, whose dedication to their job, made solving this case easier.”
