Local legislators given committee assignments

Chilton County’s two legislators, Rep. Kurt Wallace and Sen. Cam Ward, were given committee assignments during last week’s organizational session.
Wallace will work on two committees: Transportation, Utilities and Infrastructure as well as Commerce and Small Business.
“I’m excited and ready to get to work,” Wallace said of his assignment.
Wallace had hoped to be appointed to the newly created transportation committee because its oversight affects every citizen in the state.
“Everything in Alabama moves,” he said.
The commerce and small business committee works everything from guns laws and interstate commerce to mine safety and much more.
“Chilton County is primarily small businesses,” said Wallace.
Ward was chosen to co-chair the Senate Judiciary Committee. In addition to that assignment, Ward will also co-chair the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and serve on the General Fund Appropriations; Health; Confirmations (government appointments); Business and Labor; and Legislative Council committees.
The Judiciary Committee handles more bills than most committees — anything affecting the Alabama Criminal Code and the court systems falls under its umbrella.
“It’s a heavy workload committee and traditionally handles more bills than other committees,” said Ward, who worked on the House’s Judiciary Committee for eight years. “This is a big honor to be selected for this committee. It’s not one that usually goes to a freshman (senator).”
