Medicare open enrollment ends Dec. 31

It’s that time of year again where deciding on a Medicare plan and changes as soon as possible are important.
Medicare open enrollment began Dec. 22 and lasts until Dec. 31. Those enrolled in Medicare can review the changes being made by their current plan and compare it to others to make sure it still meets their needs.
“This is important because so many people procrastinate, especially because of the holiday,” said Rachel Creech, state health insurance program coordinator. “Then they run around at the last minute, but if they do not get it done on time they will be stuck with their current plan for another year.”
There are more than 40 plans customers can choose from to meet their needs. Those interested in enrolling or changing their plan can do so online at www.medicare.gov, submit their information and review the available plans they qualify for.
“Come Jan. 1, the plans will take effect, and those enrolled will not be able to change them until the next annual enrollment, which will begin next October through December,” said Creech.
Those who do not have prescription drug coverage can also enroll in a drug plan during the open enrollment time frame.
“We just want to encourage people to enroll or make changes as soon as possible because the process can take a couple of days, and if they do not meet the deadline then they will have to wait another year,” said Creech.
