Lady Devils claim area title

The Maplesville Lady Red Devils became the Class 1A Area 6 softball champions Saturday, winning their second consecutive game against the Holy Spirit Titans, 3-2.
The Devils’ opponent was decided by the outcome of the Holy Spirit-Verbena game played earlier that morning. The Titans beat the Verbena Lady Red Devils 6-4.
Courtney Killingsworth was the winning pitcher in both of Maplesville’s victories, striking out a combined 14 batters and giving up just two hits Friday and four hits Saturday.
Killingsworth and Heather Chambers each had two hits Saturday, and Morgan Little and Kortisha Morrow reached base on hits.
“What’s gotten us to this point is that our pitcher has been solid, and we’ve played good defense behind her,” said Maplesville assistant coach Chad Harrison.
Although Harrison was proud of the win, he was concerned that Holy Spirit reached base six times on errors. This is something the Lady Devils can work on between now and May 7, when they face Billingsley at Troy. That game will be played at 12:30 p.m.
For those keeping track of stats, Maplesville had 13 hits in their 13-1 victory over Holy Spirit on Friday. Verbena lost to Holy Spirit 2-1 in Game 1 of the tournament, which was hosted by Maplesville.
