Verbena bounced back from a loss and won Isabella’s Mustang Invitational softball tournament on April 10.
The Red Devils defeated Billingsley, 8-4, and Isabella, 15-5, before falling to Billingsley, 13-12.
But the tournament champs bounced back with a 10-6 win over the same Bears team.
“I am so proud of all the girls and the way that they fought back after the loss and won when we had to,” coach Jennifer Ingram said. “Our seniors did a great job of stepping up and leading the team when we needed them.”
Chanin Hancock earned all three of Verbena’s wins and struck out 19 batters. She was also a combined 8-for-12 at the plate in the first three games with a home run.
Ashlie Shiers went a combined 10-for-16 in the tournament with two doubles.
Haley Kelley went 7-for-8 with a double in the second and third games combined.
“I feel like we are finally playing up to our potential as a team, and I hope that we will carry this momentum to the area tournament in a few weeks,” Ingram said.
