2009 was a hard year for Operation: Santa Claus. While donations were down, the number of people needing help increased due to the poor economy.
But thanks to the donations of many generous individuals and organizations in the community, several local families had a memorable Christmas. The gifts were given out on Tuesday night, Dec 22.
Now in its seventh year, Operation: Santa Claus is sponsored by the Chilton County Fraternal Order of Police, which includes members from most law enforcement agencies in Chilton County.
“We were able to help approximately 279 children,” said John Shearon, spokesperson for FOP. “This is our lowest in the years we have been able to do this.”
Added Shearon, “We would like to thank Fred’s, Wal-Mart, Dollar Tree, (Chilton County) EMA, Chilton County ESP and all the other companies and individuals who made donations of money, toys and time to our cause this year. Your donations truly helped make this a better year than what we anticipated.”
Shearon also wanted to thank Janae Traywick, Jimmy Hardee and the Clanton Fire Department for their time and donations in helping organize Santa pictures.
“Our hopes are the new year will bring better circumstances for everyone,” Shearon said.
