No. 3 Loachapoka on Friday looked like one of best teams in Class 1A, shutting out Verbena, 45-0.
A steady rain equalized the field through most of the first quarter, but once the downpour tapered off, the Indians took over the game.
Loachapoka quarterback Patrick Moore had a great night, throwing for two touchdowns and running in two more in the first half.
The Indians had 134 rushing yards and 95 passing yards in the first half, compared 26 yards on the ground and 22 yards through the air for Verbena.
Moore found receiver Rontavis Dinkins from 11 yards out to go up, 6-0, with 4:39 to go in the first quarter. He followed that up with TD runs of 13 and 24 yards to help his team go up 21-0.
A late first-half 48-yard bomb from Moore to Dinkins would put the Indians up 28-0 and put the game out of contention.
The Devils never gave up, though, but just couldn’t catch any breaks. Verbena turned the ball over on downs twice within the Indians’ 15-yard line.
Kelly Lucas was the Devils leading rushing, with an unofficial 40 yards on the ground.
Verbena now stands at 2-2 overall and 1-2 in Class 1A, Region 4. The undefeated Indians improve to 3-0 and 3-0 in area.
The Devils travel to in-county rival Isabella next week.
