FAIRFIELD — The state of Alabama is trying to clamp down on the problem of steel coils falling off trucks and damaging roadways.
Gov. Bob Riley will sign a bill Monday that adds new regulations for transporting the huge, heavy loads to and from steel mills.
The new law will require companies to use drivers who are trained and certified in handling the coils.
Steel coils falling off trucks has become a big problem in the Birmingham area. Coils weighing as much as 23 tons have fallen off trucks in the metro area more than a dozen times in the last five years.
No one has been killed, but the accidents have caused millions of dollars in damage to roads.
