Calera hit four home runs yesterday on its way to an 18-3 win in the opening game of the Isabella baseball team’s Mustang B-Day.
Calera’s Trent Posey was robbed of a home run when Isabella’s Sawyer Cahalane made a leaping catch at the wall for the first out of the top of the third inning.
Cahalane’s two colleagues in the Isabella outfield also got in on the defensive showcase.
Center fielder Austin Anderson sprinted then dove to his left to deny Adam Winterbottom a run-scoring hit in the top of the fourth, and right fielder Wilie Stacy left his feet and rolled to make the third out of the inning with two runners on base.
The Mustangs (3-8), however, didn’t enjoy nearly as much success on the mound or at the plate as they did in the field.
Calera recorded 15 hits and six walks compared to Isabella’s seven hits and zero walks.
The Eagles (7-6) scored five runs in the first, four in the second, one in the third and eight in the fourth against three different Isabella pitchers.
A single by Stacy in the second scored Hunter Mims and Austin Haigler, who singled back-to-back to start the half-inning.
Anderson doubled with one out in the third and scored on a Mims double to conclude the scoring for the hosts.
Calera’s Dylan Gray earned the win, and Isabella’s Matt Morgan suffered the loss.
Isabella was scheduled to play Shades Mountain later in the day and will visit Verbena at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
