The competition between Billingsley and Maplesville was so good on Thursday that the time allotted wasn’t enough.
Jay Tyus and Bryant Reese combined to lead Billingsley over the hosts, 54-49, in the boys game, which went into overtime when Maplesville’s Brian Bailey couldn’t connect on a desperation heave from halfcourt with time expiring.
Reese scored the first five points of the extra period, and the Red Devils could never catch up.
Tyus was solid the whole game, scoring 13 of his 16 points in the second half and altering Maplesville shots all night with his defense.
Josh Talley scored a game-high 19 points for the Red Devils.
In the girls game, Billingsley turned the ball over two times with less than 30 seconds to play, but Maplesville missed three free throws in the final minutes and the visitors won, 37-34.
The outcome wasn’t decided until Billingsley’s Lori Davis pulled down the rebound on one of those missed free throws and found teammate Wendy Raines behind the Maplesville defense for a lay-in with 6 seconds remaining.
Kortisha Morrow and Viola Tyus were Maplesville’s and Billingsley’s leading scorers, respectively, with 14 points each.
