Birmingham Police say an argument over a cigarette led one man to fatally stab another.
The homicide occurred around 1:30 a.m. Thursday at a residence on 65th Street North.
Officers from the East Precinct found 61-year-old Malcolm Hurd lying on a bedroom floor mortally wounded.
An investigation showed Hurd was stabbed several times when he refused to give the suspect a cigarette. Police said a 24-year-old male was detained for questioning. No charges were immediately filed.
Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper said “it was another example of a senseless murder.”
The city has recorded 73 homicides this year.
